NAMIWalks Los Angles County October 2016

We've passed the 3/4 on our way to our goal of raising $2,000.00, and we won't stop until we get to the top (of our fundraising thermometer, that is).  Thermometer will update soon.  Correct current amount raised is$1579.95.  Only $420.05 to go.  Help us get there by 12/5; time is running out.

This 5k walk raises funds for vital mental illness support programs, education, awareness and advocacy.

Saturday October 1st at Downtown Los Angles' Grand Park on the Event Lawn between Spring and N. Broadway

On site check-in begins at 8 am, walking begins at 10 am

We need walkers and fundraisers to join our walk team!  Sign up to walk or donate securely online by clicking this link to go to the Changing Minds team page or come by Room 157 at lunch or nutrition.   Many Verdugo Hills High teachers are also collecting funds in their classrooms, too.

Every journey begins with that first step! As NAMIWalks celebrates our 14th Anniversary in 2016, we are proud to be NAMI’s largest and most successful mental health awareness and fundraising event in the country!

Through NAMIWalks public display of support for people with mental health challenges, we are changing how Americans view mental illness. Please join us as we improve lives and our communities one step at a time.

Our theme here in Los Angeles County this year is LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION on Mental Health!  Join us in shining the light on mental health issues, focusing the camera on our stories to reduce the stigma, and taking action to help NAMI provide the no cost programs of education, support and advocacy for those impacted by mental illness.  Become a mental health STAR!

A Report from NAMIWalks 2015

After spending weeks building for NAMIWalks LA County, signing up walkers, and raising money to support our local NAMI affiliate (NAMI Glendale), we looked forward to participating in the walk itself. Come walk day morning, Saturday, October 3rd, a contingent of more than a dozen Changing Minds Club members and supporters gathered in downtown LA’s Grand Park.  The weather cooperated with a golden sunny day that was nice and warm without being too, too hot.

As the crowd assembled, we were regaled with speeches and musical presentations.  Community groups, service organizations, and local NAMI affiliates had set up tables and booths sharing about their programs and the services they provide.  There was free face painting and sign making. It was exciting to see so many thousands of people supporting people afflicted with mental illnesses and the work NAMI does helping individualss and their families.

Our anticipation built as our last members had arrived and the start time for the walk neared.  At last we were off, embarking on a 5k walk through downtown LA passing many land mark building.  At the end we were a little tired but glad to have participated in such a significant and worthy event.

To top it all, as of October 28th, we have reached 85% of our ambitious goal of raising $1,000 for NAMIWalks from our VHHS community.  We hope to meet or exceed this goal soon, as we continue to solicit and accept donations for this important cause. Thank you Dons!
