The Spring Concert Tour we went on with the advanced vocal groups from Verdugo Hills High School was such a successful trip on so many levels. This really is something every music program should do for their students. They sang at a festival and two other concerts in two days. They got to interact with choir students at two other schools before and after our concerts there. The third day was spent sight-seeing in San Francisco (most had not been there). We cut corners when we could, drove vans instead of a charter bus, bargained with the hotel and others. The costs were covered almost exclusively from fundraisers throughout the year. We started off with a plan to charge every family $500 to cover the tour fees when we were going with a tour company. After many, many roadblocks, I was persistent and determined this WOULD happen for my students, and it did. It was certainly a flashback for me to the 1994 Huntington Park HS Band Spring Tour when I was a young (ish) high school band director. Thank you to my co-director, Daniel Lopez, my close friend and director of the Mercy HS Showchoir, Dolce, Laura Flaviani, Jason Chang, director of the Lowell Hs Choir and principal, Andy Ishibashi, my chaperones, Mr. Martinez, Ms. Wilson, and Ms. Soracco, and our just great, wonderful, and talented students from Verdugo Hills High School! Dr. Edward Trimis, Principal and Director of the Java Jive Jazz Singers and Fiesta Forte Showchoir.
