A versatile singer, songwriter and actor, A Martinez is probably best known for his role as the heartthrob Cruz Castillo on the television soap opera Santa Barbara, a role he played for eight years and for which he received three Emmy nominations as well as winning the Emmy for Best Actor in 1990.
Martinez began performing as a singer and rock 'n' roller during his teenage years. He made his singing debut at the Hollywood Bowl at age 12. By the time he attended Verdugo, Martinez was performing with his own rock band.
No slouch at Verdugo, Martinez graduated in the top of his class as one of six life-members of the distinguished Ephebian Honor Society. He was Senior Class President in the Spring semester, a member of the Knights service organization, a member of the California Scholarship Federation, a Thespian, and a member of El Senado, the student governing council. He was voted Most Talented and Best Personality by his graduating class as well as being selected for the Class Service Award!
After graduating, Martinez grew his hair long and with his band, The Makahas, recorded his first single on the Papyrus Records label featuring a title song that he had written, "I'll Be Leaving You." The flip side featured a Hays-Williams-Rice song "Shake a Tail Feather."
Numerous film and television projects followed including roles in Elvis Presley's last movie, A Change of Habit; Zero Mostel's last film, Once Upon a Scoundrel; with Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins and Richard Gere in The Honorary Consul; and with Rosanne Barr and Meryl Streep in She-Devil where he played a hilarious role as Streep's butler and lover, Garcia. And, of course, for all you fans of the television series, L.A. Law, you'll remember that Martinez played the role of Daniel Morales on that show for two years.
Martinez starred in the 1996 HBO original movie The Cherokee Kid with comedian Sinbad and made guest appearances on television's Profiler and Touched by an Angel series.
In early 1997, he joined the cast of NBC's Profiler on a regular basis reprising his previous guest role as ATF Agent Nick "Coop" Cooper, a bomb expert and love interest for the series lead. (For more information, the NBC web site has a profile on Martinez as well as a profile of his character located at http://www.nbc.com/thrillogy/profiler/.)
And while Martinez's music has, at times, had to take a back seat to his acting career, he recently wrote and released (1995) a CD album entitled "Fragrance and Thorn" (Magic House Records). He is currently working on a follow-up.
Martinez is married to Leslie Bryans. The couple has three children.
