Congressman Buck McKeon is the US Representative for the 25th District of California, a district that includes a sizable section of northern Los Angeles County including the Santa Clarita Valley, part of the San Fernando Valley, and the Antelope Valley. Elected to Congress in 1992, Buck McKeon was chosen by his fellow representatives to also serve as President of the Republican Freshman Class in the 103rd Congress.
After graduating from Verdugo Hills High School, Buck McKeon attended Brigham Young University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree. Subsequently, he was instrumental in helping his family's retail business, Howard & Phil's Western Wear, expand into a growing chain of stores in California, Nevada and Utah.
Later, Buck became active in public life, first serving as the president of the William S. Hart Union High School District in Santa Clarita and, then, as the first mayor of the then newly incorporated City of Santa Clarita.
McKeon was elected to Congress as a successful businessman promising to shake up government. According to his office, his efforts to reform government have, so far, resulted in the elimination of 25 subcommittees saving taxpayers $35 million, limits on the terms of committee chairmen, an audit of the House's books, and the public disclosure of the legislative discharge petition.
The congressman's constituent service on behalf of disaster victims after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake received wide praise from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services.
His legislative efforts have also been recognized by several national organizations. He has received awards from the Watchdogs of the Treasury, the National Taxpayers Union and the US Chamber of Commerce for his leadership in cutting federal spending and reducing taxes. In 1996, Congressman McKeon was named Newsmaker of the Year by the Santa Clarita Press Club and honored with the American Security Award and the Thomas Jefferson Award for Distinguished Service.
Congressman McKeon serves as Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education, Training and Life-Long Learning and on the National Security Committee.
He and his wife, Patricia, have six children and twelve grandchildren and live in Santa Clarita.
Special thanks to Congressman McKeon and his assistant, Karen Weiss (VHHS Class of 1987), for their assistance with this profile.
